The Sandwich Method for Press-On Nails: I Tested It for 3 Weeks. Now I Will Never Go Back.
I have been on both sides of the glue-versus-tabs war. Glue gave me two weeks of wear but destroyed my nails when I took them off. Tabs gave me easy removal but popped off when I looked at them wrong. Then someone on Reddit posted a video showing a sandwich method — a layer of glue ON the nail bed, a sticky tab ON the press-on, then press them together. Two hundred upvotes and sixty-two comments of people saying it changed their lives.
I tested it for three weeks. Here is what worked, what failed, and why I am never going back to using just one or the other.

1. Glue Alone Gave Me Two Weeks of Wear — and Two Days of Recovery
For six months I was a glue-only person. I loved the bond. A fresh tube gave me fourteen days of wear through typing, dishwashing, and the gym. But removal was a nightmare. I soaked. I oiled. I flossed. Every removal left my nail beds thin and peeling. After back-to-back sets my nails looked like they had been through a war.
The American Academy of Dermatology warns that aggressive removal is the number one cause of nail damage from artificial nails.1 Glue-only wear puts you on a cycle of strong bond, harsh removal, damaged nails — and the more damaged your nails get, the worse the next set sticks.
2. Tabs Alone Gave Me Easy Removal — and Nails on the Floor
I switched to tabs for three months. BTArtbox jelly tabs. The removal was beautiful — warm water, a little oil, and the press-ons slid off with zero damage. My natural nails actually recovered. They grew longer and stronger than they had been in years.
But the wear was maddening. A tab-only set lasted four days if I was lucky. Typing popped the thumb by Tuesday. Washing my hair took out the index finger. By the weekend I was carrying a backup set and a tube of tabs in my purse like a nail emergency kit. Making press-ons last was a constant battle.

3. The Sandwich Method Gave Me Both — Two Weeks of Wear AND Damage-Free Removal
Here is the sandwich method exactly as the Reddit video showed it. One thin layer of nail glue on your natural nail bed. One sticky tab on the back of the press-on. Press them together and hold for thirty seconds. The glue bonds to your nail on one side and the tab bonds to the press-on on the other. The tab acts as a protective barrier between the glue and the press-on — so when you remove the nail, the tab peels off clean, and the glue residue stays on the tab instead of on your nail.
I got thirteen days of wear. Typing, showers, dishwashing, the gym. One nail lifted at the edge on day twelve and I resealed it with top coat. When I removed them on day fourteen, the press-ons came off clean. No scraping. No soaking. No thin, peeling nail beds. The glue stayed on the tab and the tab peeled off in one piece.
It makes sense when you think about it. Cyanoacrylate bonds best to keratin, your natural nail protein. It bonds poorly to the silicone-based adhesive of a tab. So the glue-tab interface is intentionally weaker than the glue-nail interface. The set stays on through wear but releases cleanly during removal. A 2021 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology confirmed that protective barrier layers between adhesive and nail plate significantly reduce removal trauma.2
4. The One Thing That Ruined My First Attempt
I tried the sandwich method three weeks before my successful run and it failed in two days. The reason was simple and stupid: my glue was three months old. It had thickened from ambient moisture and never fully cured. The tab held the nail on, but the glue underneath stayed gummy. When I swapped to a fresh tube of glue, everything worked.
That is the catch with the sandwich method. It takes the best parts of both systems but you still need fresh glue and clean prep. A dry nail bed, a quick alcohol wipe, and a glue tube that has been open less than eight weeks. Skip any of those and the sandwich falls apart. Literally.

The Bottom Line
I still keep a tube of glue and a sheet of tabs in my nail kit. If I want two weeks of bulletproof wear, I sandwich. If I am just going to a wedding and taking them off the next morning, I tab-only. If I need max hold for a vacation where I cannot risk a pop-off, I glue-only with an extra careful removal plan. But for everyday life — typing, gym, dishes, life — the sandwich is what I reach for first.
