How to File Press-On Nails to Fit: The mm Method

My 5-Step Filing-to-Fit Method

1. Prep your natural nail first. Push back the cuticle, buff the surface dull, and wipe with alcohol. I go through the full prep routine before I pick up a file.
2. Measure your nail bed in mm. My middle finger runs about 10.5–11.5mm wide, so I know exactly how much press-on I can leave.
3. File the cuticle edge of the press-on to match your curve. Short, light strokes from the center out. You’re matching the dip near your cuticle, not shaving the whole nail.
4. Take down the two sidewalls. The sidewalls are where lift almost always starts. File just the overlap so the press-on sits flush against your skin on both sides.
5. Seal the edge. A few gentle passes with a fine file take off the shine and any sharp corner. Run your finger across it — if you feel a ledge, keep going.

If You Bite Your Nails: Filing Is Your Friend
